Higher Plane is a family owned vineyard located in the heart of the Margaret River wine region. It was established in 1997 with the planting of the first vines on the Wintarru Road site, in the Forest Grove sub-region.

The property was founded by Craig and Cathy Smith, and its discovery was the result of an extensive search to find a site to create handcrafted, precise wines, which are a genuine expression of their origin. Their passions lead them to assess over a hundred properties across the region for soil quality and aspect, of which thirty two were visited before the Wintarru Rise site was selected.

The early developments on the site included the construction of a 60 megalitre dam and the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon (the Houghton clone), Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay (the Gingin clone), Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

In 2006 the vineyard was purchased by the late Roger Hill and his wife Gillian Anderson.

Progressive plantings have included more Chardonnay clones (including the traditional Burgundian clones 76, 95, 96 and 277), Tempranillo (five different clones), Graciano, Shiraz, Verdejo and Fiano. By 2008 the area under vine had expanded to 16 hectares.

White Blend

A powerful nose of pear, nuts, beeswax and white flowers leads onto a brightly fruited yet textural palate with crisp acidity & a savoury minerality 

Two varieties that we believe are meant to dance with one another. Cabernet provides structure and poise while Malbec lends flair and confidence – with only minimal choreography in the winery this blend truly comes alive. Supple, generous & juicy.


Characteristically fine-boned, elegant and lifted with dense redcurrant and blackberry flavours framed by fine-grained tannin & oak.

Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

This is a single vineyard origin wine, utilising declassified top tier material along with purpose made wine featuring complementary varieties such as Malbec and Cabernet Franc to complete the blend. Supple and juicy with blackcurrant and cherry, a dusting of spices and fine, ripe tannins

There’s a point on the horizon in our vineyard that the rows appear to converge into one another creating an impression that the vines roll on forever. Once you’ve tried a bottle, vanishing point may take on a whole new meaning – it is delicious! Floral, expressive & energetic.

Whole bunch carbonic maceration for 2 weeks, then destemmed & wild ferment on skins. No additions, no oak, unfined. Juicy & vibrant – may be chilled. Drink young 

Verdejo Blend

Co-fermented Verdejo, Chardonnay, Fiano & Sauvignon Blanc – fresh, textural, tropical with tangy finish

Fragrant violet aromas backed by dark fruits, ground spice, white pepper & slightly grainy tannins 

Fiano Blend

A riff on ‘Two’s company, Three’s a crowd’. Three’s Company proves the exception to the rule – creating harmony between three varieties very different in heritage and style. Floral Fiano hailing from Italy, rich Verdejo from Spain and zesty Sauvignon Blanc via France, now all together in our beautiful Karridale vineyard. A lively, tangy, zesty wine.


A typical late summer sun disappearing behind the Karri forest at our karridale vineyard serves as a reminder and a call to action to open something cold and crisp as the sun sets! A fresh, bright saline wine.


Named after a song by The Libertines, this Malbec is for the freethinking & bravemade without constraints & in a style that heroes our special vineyard with the juiciest Malbec in the region. Soft, balanced & rounded.
 

Normally pristine Sauvignon Blanc that has had its hair ruffled and has been caught up with the wrong winemaker. The fruit has had a run-in with some new French oak and barrel stirring to create a wine that is not the Sauvignon Blanc you once knew! Crisp, textured & complex.


We handle every Chardonnay bunch & berry like a precious stone – selecting for their purity & quality and applying the hand of the artisan to enhance the natural beauty of the fruit. Aromatic, refreshing & restrained.
