2018 Coward & Black Vineyards Special Cuvée Wilyabrup Blanc de Blancs


Blessed with ancient, bountiful soils, evenly infused with the free draining red ochre gravel that characterises the soils of this great wine growing region, all our vineyards are dry grown, each vine sending its roots deep into the ground to find  the pristine water that lies below. In summer, fresh sea breezes blow in across the Indian Ocean cooling the vines. And in winter the ocean moderates the temperature, preventing frosts on even the coldest days.

Our home vineyard is located in the middle of the Wilyabrup appellation mapped out by Dr John Gladstones in 1967. We first planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz using cuttings descendant from the famous Jack Mann super-clone. Then in 2004 we planted Chardonnay and Semillon and added a Sauvignon Blanc vineyard in 2008. We also established a Chenin Blanc vineyard in the Swan Valley in 2011.

We believe that great wine comes from great fruit and we put our focus on nurturing the vineyard and our faith in the soil and the seasons. Our wines have won trophies and medals in competitions all over Australia and the world including: The Decanter World Wine awards in London, The Sydney International Wine Competition, The James Halliday Australian Chardonnay and Cabernet Challenges, The Perth Royal Wine Show, The Royal Queensland Wine Show, The Royal Melbourne Wine Show, The Wine Awards of Western Australia, The Margaret River


In total we have 9.2 hectares or approximately 23 acres of vines.

The 2018 Vintage of this alluring wine was declared equal best Rosé in the world at the World Rosé Championships in Poland in 2019 and every vintage since has gone on to win gold.

Made from 100% shiraz grapes from wilyabrup vineyard, this l wine is a lovely medium Salmon Pink colour. Hints of Turkish delight, red currants and watermelon on the nose. With flavours of white strawberries, pomegranate and cranberry. Some refreshing spritz and a crisp dry finish.

A truly delightful summer Wine . Great to pair with a wide range of light and healthy food, such as grilled salmon or poached chicken.

Brut

Made from exquisite hand harvested fruit from our Wilyabrup vineyard. This delicious champagne-style Blanc De Blancs was fermented in the traditional way in seasoned french oak barrels. With an uplifting bouquet of fresh citrus and pear and a palate of toasty brioche, granny smith apple and honey nougat, it sings of the freshness and vitality of its pristine maritime home.

At the 2022  Decanter World  Wine awards in London, in a record field of 1269 sparkling white wines, 445 of which came from France’s Champagne region, our first ever vintage Blanc de Blancs received the same score as such illustrious champagnes as the Reserve Brut from Tattinger, Imperial Brut from Moët et Chandon, Royal Grand Cru Brut from Pommery as well as the famous La Belle Epoch from Perrier-Jouet, as well as winning a Gold Medal at the 2022 Margaret River Wine Show.
