Palate

A creamy palate with raspberry, floral and spice notes. Richly textured the red fruit characters are complemented by voluptuous creamy barrel fermentation texture and balanced by fine lingering tannin.

Growing Conditions

In 2020 we sourced a cracking parcel of Syrah from a cool site in Wallcliffe, south of Margaret River township, and grown on gravel soil with a northern aspect by 25yo Syrah vines.

Winemaking

We wanted to make European Rose: dry, savoury textured, refreshing and great with food.

In typical S+H fashion a great opportunity arose, this time from a disaster. In October 2014 the Frankland region was subjected to a vicious hailstorm which destroyed a large component of the developing crop. The young shoots were soft and inflourescences were forming; damage was at 100% on many affected vineyards. Certainly this one was. The 2015 Tainted Love Rose was so good we have now added it to the portfolio fulltime.

The fruit was harvested and quickly destemmed to the press, with 60 minutes on skins to develop a blush of colour and a light tannin structure. We pressed to tank then ran the whole juice to old puncheons for a wild ferment, where it spent 4 months on lees before bottling.

Appearance

The 2020 Syrah Rose is a pale pink colour.
