Hay Shed Hill is part of a small and prestigious group of pioneer vineyards that have established Margaret River as a world-class wine producing region. 

The Hay Shed Hill vineyard is located in the Wilyabrup Valley, the premier area Margaret River Wine Region.  Wilyabrup has the highest concentration of premium wine producers and is home to many of the original Margaret River vineyards.  Only 5 Km from the Indian Ocean with an elevated aspect, the vineyard thus enjoys the benefit of the 'doctor' the well-known sea breeze that comes off the ocean each afternoon and cools down the vineyard giving the fruit a much cooler climate character than the latitude of the vineyard might suggest. The vineyard is hilly with several aspects ranging from steep south facing slopes on which the best Chardonnay is located, to equally steep north facing slopes where the best Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys the full face of the sun. The majority of the vineyard is dry grown producing small yields of outstanding fruit.

The Hay Shed Hill vineyard is situated on a picturesque property that was established as a dairy farm as part of the group settlement scheme for returned soldiers from the First World War.
Vines were first planted in 1973 under the guidance of Dr Kevin Cullen when the property was known as Sussex Vale. In the late 1980’s the vineyard was bought by Morrison Family. 
As the old hay shed from the dairy days was a local landmark, the Morrison’s used this to create the new name for the property, Hay Shed Hill. Hay making tools found in the hay shed provided them with the inspiration for Hay Shed’s sister label – Pitchfork Wines.

Hay Shed Hill winemaker and general manager, Michael Kerrigan is one of the most respected winemakers in Australia. Over 35 years’ experience puts Michael amongst the best winemakers in the country.

After excelling at winemaking studies at Rosewothy College in South Australia (he was Dux of his year), Michael spent thirteen vintages as the winemaker for Howard Park and Madfish wines making wine from grapes grown in virtually every wine region in Western Australia.

Michael received numerous accolades including nomination for Qantas Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2003. Michael has been a senior judge numerous shows including regular positions at the Perth Royal Show and the Wine Show of Western Australia Mt Barker.

In late 2006 Michael and his partners, bought Hay Shed Hill in Margaret River. The opportunity to get involved with Hay Shed Hill was one that Michael could not let pass. “I knew the vineyard and always coveted the fruit, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to take ownership in a classic old pioneer vineyard in the elite of Margaret River but one which, for various reasons, had not quite realized it’s potential.”

From making wines from all over the South West of Western Australia Michael now is focused on single vineyard expression of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon and Chardonnay in particular.

This Chardonnay displays clean, crisp tropical fruit characters with hints of zesty freshness. Only a touch of oak was used in the making of this wine highlighting the fresh fruity nature of Chardonnay.

The Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines.  

The Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Merlot highlights the strength of Margaret River in producing medium-bodied, flavoursome and elegant Cabernet blends. Ripe berry fruits and textural tannins showcase this classic wine style.

This Pitchfork Shiraz displays lifted violet aromas, dark cherry and plum fruit flavours with peppery hints.  A fleshy palate full of berry fruits with a soft lingering finish.

This wine showcases the strength of Margaret River for this, the noblest of red wine varieties. This is classic, intense, ripe and elegantly structured Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the great Margaret River vineyards. 

The classic Australian Shiraz is paired with Tempranillo in this exciting vibrant, flavoursome wine, all the fleshiness of ripe black fruit Shiraz with the savoury licorice notes of Tempranillo.  Matured in quality French oak this wine is a new interpretation of a great Australian wine.

Sauvignon Blanc Blend

The Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines.  

The Hay Shed Hill Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a bright vibrant fresh wine full of the lively clean  tropical flavours typical of this classic Margaret River blend.

Fully mature 'dry grown' Pinot Noir vines on the Hay Shed Hill estate were harvested and the grapes whole bunch pressed to release only the finest lightly coloured juice to produce the fragrant 'dry style' rosé.  Fresh lively and delicious this wine is an ideal accompaniment to a summer's afternoon.

Planted in 1975 to Gin Gin (Mendoza) clone Chardonnay, Block 6 has a steep south-facing aspect thereby reducing the sunlight interception by the vines and creating a cool micro climate ideal for quality Chardonnay production. These dry grown vines produce tiny quantities of fruit with distinctive restrained minerally character.

COLOUR: Brilliant appearance, great clarity and the lightest of green hues.
NOSE: Mineral aromatics with background savoury flinty notes. The fruit is in the fresh white pear spectrum with perhaps some citric elements.
PALATE: The palate is vibrant and light. The old vine depth of fruit provides a complexity not seen in most Chardonnay - there is always more to find in the wine without it being overworked or over-blown. This is a beautiful wine with depth of flavour and texture that will stand up in a fine dining situation.

Block 2 Cabernet Sauvignon

This Cabernet Merlot displays the quality of Margaret River for these two well match varieties. Ripe berry fruits with chocolate mint aromas with a rich soft and too easy to drink palate, sometimes we just get it right.

Pitchfork Cabernet Merlot

The Hay Shed Hill Vineyard Series showcase the character of the fruit grown on this classic vineyard site with distinctive and expressive wines.

This wine showcases the strength of Margaret River for Chardonnay with a restrained, modern, elegantly structured wine from one of the great Margaret River vineyards. 

In keeping with the tradition of great Bordeaux blends this wine is medium-bodied with the emphasis placed on textural complexity and elegance rather than brute strength and depth of fruit.  Classic Cabernet berry aromas with all the flavour and textural complexity of the lesser well-known, but crucial secondary varieties.

Cabernet Franc is an integral component of many of the world’s great red wines but not a variety often seen on its own.
Cabernet Franc is an indivisible part of great Cabernet blends with several attributes that neither Cabernet Sauvignon nor Merlot can provide - great aromatic intensity of berry fruits, greater early intensity and, in special cases, tannin complexity.

Hay Shed Hill has been renowned for its straight varietal Cabernet Franc for more than a decade. The climate, soil, aspect and individual eccentricities of the vineyard have consistently produced Cab Franc of a quality not equalled in my 20 years of making wine in Western Australia - winemaker Michael Kerrigan.

Block 8 Cabernet Franc

Block 1 consists of some of the oldest Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes in Margaret River. On a steep gravelly slope these old dry-grown vines produce a very small crop of bright and varietally expressive Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc with a depth of flavour and intensity rarely seen in these varieties.
