Nose
The wild barrel ferment on solids adds savoury aromatics such as wild herbs and
toasty / flinty notes.
Palate
Flavours of rockmelon, pear and citrus drive the palate with layers of complexity
providing the thumb print of the Evans & Tate house style. Extended maturation in barrel
has also contributed malt flavours, textural complexity and beautiful integration.
Winemaking
A very distinct 2016 vintage. The dry, warm spring and summer meant it was tracking early but a tropical
rain event in January pushed back harvest dates. Thanks to the hard work of our Vineyard Managers, coupled
with the warm dry conditions and fresh daily sea breezes, this did not give us issues. Of our main white
varieties, Chardonnay is yet again the pick of the bunch, with extraordinary flavour depth and length.
Broadway refers to the name given by our winemakers to the popular stretch of Caves Road along which
our Chardonnay vineyards are dotted – these strategic locations capture the array of characters of
Chardonnay to embody the essence of this variety in Margaret River. The fruit was picked when each
vineyard achieved optimum ripeness with a combination of hand and gentle machine picking. The cold fruit
was directly loaded into the press for whole bunch pressing with no pressings juice used in the blend. This
gentle handling of the cold grapes and juice is critical to produce our unique style of Chardonnay. Just over
30% of the wine was selected to undergo wild fermentation in 50% new French oak barrels. All batches
remained on yeast lees for 10 months. Select parcels from each vineyard block were then blended and
bottled.
